A Service of Thanksgiving for the life and work of pianist Nihal Corea who passed away on 24th March 2014 was held at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Panadura at 4:30pm on Saturday, 21st June 2014, well attended by family and friends.
The hymns included "How Great Though Art, "Yes Jesus Loves Me", "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "I Come To The Garden Alone". The piano accompanist was Nihal's own nephew, Ramesh Fonseka (sister's son).
Some touching words (from Canada) by Nihal's daughter Maljini Corea Amaratunga, thanking God for a loving and exceptional father and husband were played, in a moment of reflection. His grand-daughter, Shanesa was heard singing "Thawena Ma Handa", to a melody that had been composed by Nihal himself.
The sermon by the parish priest was based on the story of Lazarus and the rich man (Holy Bible, Luke 16). The congregation shared in the sacrament of Holy Communion.
A special Sinhala song of Thanksgiving for the life of Nihal "Thuthi Karannemu Obey Diviya Hata" was sung by his sister Manel Fonseka, accompanied on the piano by his wife Sriyani, commending his soul to the nearer presence of God. The tune had been composed by Nihal himself.
At the end of the service, some of Nihal's familiar smooth piano playing was streamed over the sound system, bringing back fond memories of his mastery of the keyboard.
Those who attended the cosplay costumes service were invited to partake of light refreshment afterward, by Sriyani and son, Suranga. |
