HISTORIC DABAL UK MUSIC CONCERT ON ZOOM IN MEMORY OF PRIYA WELIKALA

A UK Charity, Deaf and Blind Aid Lanka will create history on zoom by organising a fund raising event in memory of Priya Welikala on Sunday 6th June 2021 at 5 pm UK time.

Priya Welikala was a distinguished banker, he was a former General Manager of the Bank of Ceylon in London, in the UK. Priya's maternal grandmother was Melita Alvida Terentia Corea, the daughter of Gate Mudaliyar James Edward Corea of Chilaw. Priya was hugely active in the charitable sector, reaching out to the poorest of the poor. Priya, together with his wife Nadani, were founder members of a small UK charity doing big things - Deaf and Blind Aid Lanka -established in 2004.

The Welikala Family are deeply involved in this charity along with other trustees - they have been an integral part of it since the charity's inception in London. DABAL is now chaired by Lionel Bandara. The Patron of DABAL is the highly respected and formidable British disability campaigner, Lord Colin Low of the House of Lords. A few years ago Lord Low and Lady Low visited Sri Lanka and met with the Principals of the deaf and blind schools supported by DABAL at a reception organised by the British High Commissioner.

DABAL's aim and purpose as a registered British charity is to to improve the quality of life for many young Sri Lankan students who are deaf and blind who attend rural schools on the island and struggle without adequate funding.

The charity seeks to enhance the provision of welfare, educational and recreational facilities and infrastructure of these schools. DABAL has a policy to support three schools each year - the schools are chosen by lottery at the annual general meeting of DABAL- every school has an equal chance of being chosen.

DABAL has supported 16 deaf and blind schools in Sri Lanka. The historic concert on zoom aims to raise further funds for these schools.

The zoom music concert on Sunday 6th June scheduled to start at 5 pm UK time is hosted by Priya's nephew, the highly popular DJ Chami Welikala who is based in Canada. Headlining the concert is the legendary former child star of Sri Lanka, "Baby Shiromi Fernando." (Welikala) There will also be powerful live performances by Hashani Welikala, Gayathri Patrick (soprano), Lakshmi Perera and many more.

Tickets are priced at 10(GBP) and includes a free raffle ticket entry. The two raffle prizes are a cricket bat signed by the legendary Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara and a cricket ball signed by the world's greatest spin bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan. Tickets are available from the DABAL website: www.DABAL.org
